ABOUT EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL

Macon Early College opened its doors in August, 2006.  Originally housed in the Old Cartoogechaye School, with 50 students, the school moved to the new Southwestern Community College campus in July 2007.

Fully integrated into the college system, Macon Early College now has 80 students, freshmen and sophomores. The establishment of an on-going collaborative team of college and high school personnel, shared resources, and calendars has assisted in the development of a nurturing environment aimed toward college-readiness.

The focus of Macon Early College is on RIGOR, RELEVANCE, and RELATIONSHIPS. In view of this, Macon Early College has developed the following goals:

  • Support students’ acquisition of broad and deep content area knowledge as defined by North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
  • Challenge students to become meta-cognitive and committed learners.
  • Nurture students’ emotional and intellectual development into strong, successful and self-confident contributors to their families and communities.
  • Students will be able to acquire up to two years of college transferable credit or an Associate of Arts Degree – tuition free.

CURRICULUM

The curriculum at Macon Early College, while it follows the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, is both RIGOROUS AND RELEVANT for all students.  All students are required to take the ACCUPLACER College Placement Test, which places them individually in the most rigorous college curriculum that they will be successful in. College courses act in a dual role, meeting the high school graduation requirements and the general education requirements for Southwestern Community College thus making for a seamless transition in the 9-13 experience. Career oriented classes and internships help students build their own bridges between school and the community.

New this year is the creation of the Student Government and the Key Club.
