Application Process

General Procedures

Step 1: When a position becomes available, it is posted to the Employment Opportunities page maintained on the Macon County Schools website. Vacancy announcements generally include a short description of the position, the location of the position, minimum qualifications (such as licensure requirements), and the name and e-mail address of the point of contact for the vacancy. Vacancies may also be listed in other media outlets such as local area newspapers.

Step 2: Applications are available on the Macon County Schools website and at the Macon County Schools Administrative Office and may be submitted online, in person, or by mail to Macon County Schools, Personnel Department, P.O. Box 1029, Franklin, NC 28744. Applicants should also complete an Authorization and Release Form authorizing a criminal history background check. As applications are submitted, they are reviewed in consideration for the vacancy. While all active applications are eligible for review, priority review is given to applicants who have expressed a specific interest in the position to the point of contact listed in the vacancy announcement. Applications are kept on file for one year. Applicants who have an active application on file may call the Administrative Office to have their application pulled for consideration for any open vacancies within one year from date of submission.

Step 3: Following the review of applications, selected candidates are invited to sit for individual interviews for the position. Interviews are most commonly conducted by an interview team that includes the Director of Personnel, building principal or other immediate supervisor, and other representatives (teachers, parents, board members, etc.).

Step 4: Using input from the interview team, candidates are ranked in order of preference for the position. If a suitable candidate to fill the position is not identified during the interview process, the vacancy is reposted. Additional applications are received for review, a second round of interviews is conducted, and the cycle repeats until a suitable candidate is identified for the position.

Step 5: Employment references provided by the top candidate(s), including the candidate's most recent supervisor or employer, are checked.

Step 6: The top candidate for the position is contacted and extended an initial employment offer. This initial offer is contingent on several factors such as approval from the Board of Education and suitable results on further candidate screenings, including criminal background checks.

Step 7: The candidate schedules an appointment with Lynn Fox in the personnel Office to complete several routine pre-employment tasks that generally take 20-30 minutes to complete.

Step 8: Pending suitable results on criminal background checks and other screenings, the candidate is formally recommended for employment to the Board of Education. Once approved by action of the Board, the candidate is officially employed to fill the position.

Tips and Suggestions

Applicants should observe several tips as they work toward employment with the district, including:

  • Make sure that your employment application in the Personnel Office is complete. Missing materials (such as transcripts, Praxis scores, or licensure information) can delay or derail the consideration of your employment application.
  • Make sure that your employment application is accurate and updated. For example, changes to your contact information should be communicated to Lynn Fox so that you can be reached if you're selected for an interview.
  • Check the Employment Opportunities area on the Macon County Schools' website regularly. In general, vacancies appear on the website first, before appearing in other media.
  • Attend regional Job Fairs or other events to introduce yourself, to make personal contact with district supervisors, and to learn more about employment opportunities with the school district.
